Who is the Hydrotherapy Pool Suitable For?

Knee Osteoarthritis

Exercise without joint pain

Post-Surgery

Knees, hips recover faster and safely

Overweight

Train longer without heavy joint load

Stroke (Able to walk)

Practice walking and balancing safely in water

Elderly

Move freely without fear of falling

Chronic Back Pain

Warm water relaxes muscles

Why is Training in a Warm Pool Effective?

Buoyancy

Water supports 50-90% of body weight, reducing pressure on knees, hips, and spine. Train without pain.

Natural Resistance

Water creates omnidirectional resistance, gently strengthening muscles without lifting weights.

Viscosity & Support

Water supports you when you stumble, reducing fall risk. Walk and balance with confidence.

Warm Water 33-36°C

Relaxes muscles, increases blood circulation, reduces pain and spasms. Feels comfortable.

What Is Hydrotherapy — How Water Therapy Differs from Ordinary Pool Exercise

Many people assume hydrotherapy simply means getting into a swimming pool. In practice the goal, the water temperature and the supervision are all different. Here is what to know before you decide.

Hydrotherapy and aquatic therapy

Both terms describe rehabilitation carried out in water under the supervision of a physiotherapist, which is different from swimming or aqua aerobics as general fitness activities.

How it differs from pool exercise

Ordinary water exercise is designed for people who are already fit. Aquatic physical therapy prescribes individual movements based on each patient's limitations, with a physiotherapist in the pool at every session.

Why warm water matters

Our hydrotherapy pool is kept warm to relax muscles and reduce spasticity. A standard-temperature swimming pool cannot do this and may make spasticity worse.

What buoyancy provides

Water supports up to roughly 80-90 percent of body weight, so patients who feel pain bearing weight on land can begin gait training earlier and more safely.

Knee Osteoarthritis and Knee Pain — How Aquatic Therapy Helps

People with knee osteoarthritis are often caught in the same cycle: pain leads to less movement, less movement weakens the muscles around the knee, and the joint then carries load even less well. Training in water breaks that cycle.

Training without joint impact

Buoyancy greatly reduces compressive load on the knee, allowing people with osteoarthritis to walk and bend the knee without the pain they feel on land.

Building the muscles around the knee

Water resistance strengthens the thigh muscles that absorb load in place of the joint itself. As those muscles strengthen, pain usually decreases.

Who it suits

People with knee osteoarthritis who wish to avoid surgery, patients recovering after knee replacement, and older adults whose knee pain has made them afraid to walk.

Always assessed first

A physiotherapist measures range of motion and muscle strength before designing an individual knee programme, rather than applying one standard routine to everyone.

Backed by Global Research

PMC Medical Research

Patients reported a 50% pain reduction after hydrotherapy, with significant mobility improvement.

HydroWorx Study

Knee osteoarthritis pain reduced by 24% more than traditional physical therapy, with improved TUG Test results.

Cochrane Review

Aquatic exercise helps reduce pain, improve function, and quality of life for knees and hips.

Parkinson's Study

Patients undergoing hydrotherapy showed significant improvements in Berg Balance Scale and UPDRS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do hydrotherapy if I can't swim?

Absolutely, and they make up the majority of our clients. A hydrotherapy pool is not a swimming pool. Patients stand or walk in waist-to-chest deep water, requiring no swimming skills. A physical therapist is present at all times. It is very safe.

Does it hurt? Do I need to exert a lot of effort?

It does not hurt. That is the main advantage of hydrotherapy, as water reduces joint pressure by 50-90%, allowing you to move without the pain experienced on land. Intensity is gradually adjusted according to your physical condition, not heavy from the first day.

How many sessions before seeing results?

Most patients feel better from the first session, especially feeling relaxed and moving more comfortably. For sustainable pain relief, research recommends 2-3 sessions per week for 4-6 consecutive weeks. KIN physical therapists will design a program suited to your specific condition.

How is it different from a regular swimming pool?

The KIN hydrotherapy pool maintains a warm water temperature of 33-36°C at all times. A physical therapist is in the water with you every session, providing personalized programs and tracking progress, rather than just letting you into the water alone. This differs from regular pools which lack supervision and have water too cold for patients.

I'm afraid of water or not comfortable getting in. Can I still do it?

Yes. Patients with a fear of water can consult with a physical therapist before starting to acclimatize. The pool water is not deep; patients can stand at all times. A physical therapist is always present, and there are handrails around the pool. Most patients who initially fear water feel much more at ease after their first session.
