These are assisted or passive movements for the shoulder, elbow, forearm and wrist. Support the arm at the elbow and wrist, and move only through the range prescribed by a physical therapist.
- Shoulder flexion–extension
Support the elbow and wrist. Raise the arm forward and upward only within a comfortable, prescribed range, then lower it slowly. Do not force the arm overhead. Repeat up to 20 times only if prescribed and well tolerated.
- Shoulder abduction–adduction
Support the elbow and wrist. Move the arm gently out to the side and return it to the body. Do not force the arm until it touches the ear. Repeat up to 20 times only if prescribed and well tolerated.
- Shoulder internal–external rotation
Perform only if specifically taught. Keep the upper arm supported and the elbow bent, then rotate the forearm gently within the allowed range. Do not push through pain, stiffness or spasm. Repeat only the prescribed number of times.
- Elbow flexion–extension
Support the upper arm and wrist. Bend the elbow toward the shoulder, then straighten it only as far as comfortable. Repeat up to 20 times only if prescribed and well tolerated.
- Forearm supination–pronation
Keep the elbow slightly bent and supported. Rotate the forearm so the palm turns upward and downward. The movement should come from the forearm rather than twisting the wrist. Repeat up to 20 times only if prescribed and well tolerated.
- Wrist flexion–extension
Support the forearm and hand. Move the wrist gently upward and downward while keeping the fingers relaxed. Do not force the hand open or closed. Repeat up to 20 times only if prescribed and well tolerated.
